Kept Books, Maybe Pile and Organization

Last weeks post was about unhauling books with a goal of only owning the books I really like and want to reread.
This followup post will delve into my kept books, my maybe pile and how I've organized everything on my shelves.

When it comes to organizing my books I mainly kept them in color order since it's a fast way for me to find a book.

The top row has white to grey to black.

The second row has "colorful" books in rainbow-ish order.
Since they perfectly fit I left it like that, but when there'll be additions I'll start shifting the darker blue books to the top row.

The third row has three sections.
On the left there are my Harry Potters (and three illustrated ones in Finnish)
In the middle there are my classics (collections on the left and others on the right)
Then on the farmost right there's one book that I'm currently reading (technically this is my TBR pile, but I only have that one)

MAYBE pile:
These are located on the top shelf middle-ish, so still on my shelves with the others but slightly indented further.
    If I Stay 1
    Clockwork Angel 1-3
    Heist Society 1-3
    Snow Like Ashes 1-3
    Impostor 1-2
I'll be reading the first few chapters of each to see if I'm interested anymore after which I'll decided if I'll keep any of them.

Maybe: 12
Keeping: 81 classics (+1 duplicate), HP (+3 duplicates) = 95 (+4)
^ The duplicates I have are copies in Finnish

The Bookshelf II

Book Tag

I did this tag over two years ago found here and have Definitely changed it, so decided to do it again!
          Some "rules":
The book (s) you answer with must be from your bookshelf.
And include a picture of your bookshelf if you'd like to and if possible

The bookshelf. You might notice that I've gotten rid of lots of books.
By color with black & white ones in the cubes

Your bookshelf
1) Describe your bookshelf & where you got it from?
>Ikea cubes, the 5x5, and another one attached to the side from...somewhere
From top: TBR/CR,
ongoing series, classics x2

2) How do you organize it?
>I made a post two years back with how I used to do it, link.
But now? There's basically 4 sections: starting from the right-hand-side bottom - classics (by series and height), series I haven't finished (by height, mostly), my TBR (by date bought) and then on top of the main shelf: everything else, by color (a) I can easily find them rather remembering the color than the author and b) it's aesthetically really pleasing and doesn't look cluttered)

3) Thickest book? (pages)
>Winter with 824 pages.
17242187
4) Thinnest book? (pages)
>The Twits, 96 pages

5) Birthday gift
>Well I got Renegades last Christmas from my sister, does that count?

6) Smallest book? (Hight & Width)
>I've got some mass market paperbacks (though I try to never get them),
but my copy of Peter Pan suprised me when it came (it is the height of a mmp but wider, and adorable) :) link
16101115and my copy of Lord of the Flies suprised me as well (the width of a mmp but taller) link

7) Biggest book? (Hight & Width)
>My Barnes&Noble leather bound edition of Hans Christian Andersen!
>For paperbacks it's Thorn or Wonder Woman, which are taller than most of my hardbacks!
36502054
8) From a friend?
>Latest one was probably Sapphire Blue

9) Most expensive book?
>I'd say around 20 euros maybe?

10) Last book you read?
>The Idiot Brain & currently I'm reading Sea Witch

11) First one you read?
>Actually read by myself probably one of the Ella books by Timo Parvela, a Finnish author

12) More than one copy
>I have the same book in both Finnish and English for Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone and Pride and Prejudice. But same language and same book? None

13) Complete series
>Well lots, but the one with the biggest amount of books in the series would be Harry Potter, with 7

2845859814) Newest addition
>When Dimple Met Rishi

15) Has been on your shelf FOREVER
>Elli norsutyttö, a childrens book that my Grandmother used to read to me

16) Most recently published
>Sea Witch, received as an e-arc

17) Oldest book (as in the copy)
>Murder on the Orient Express, 1991 so not old at all

18) Book you won
>I think the only book I've won was Half Lost (through GoodReads), which I gave to my brother

19) Hate to let out of your sight (aka wouldn't let someone borrow)
>I actually don't mind lending my books, I like them to look worn and well read...
But maybe the one I talked about in question 15

20) Most beat up
>And the same answer goes here

21) Most pristine book
>Season of You & Me, the only physical book on my shelf that I haven't read. (There are also books I originally read from the library then later bought copies, and so haven't read that copy of)
2657514
22) Book from your childhood
>Babe by Dick King-Smith, when I was young I actually read it every summer for around 7 years in a row

23) Book that's not actually your book
>Cuckoo's Calling is my brothers, but was on my shelf so I'd read it (have yet to though)

24) Special cover (e.g. leather bound, soft, fuzzy, etc.)?
>Hans Christian Andersen, Barnes&Nobel leather bound edition

25) Favourite cover
>I really LOVE my Harry Potter editions! I chose to go with the signature editions when I bought them.
>Also I really LOVE my Hunger Games foil editions
>Oh and the classic lines by Sara Singh for Emma, P&P and Jane Eyre

26) Has been on your shelf the longest and you STILL haven't read?
>Well actually since I'm doing the TBR thing I've talked about (you can read an old post here) I only have 1(!!!). Also a link to my 2018 updated TBR post is here
So the answer is Season of You & Me, which I got last summer

27) Any signed books?
>Torch Against the Night

Data and Statistics

So every year I make a yearly post about all kinds of data I gather about the books I've read.
So this year I decided to add some data to my monthly wrap-ups as well will I've been enjoying.

2016 - link

I decided to make a list regarding the data I gather and add to my Excel and show some charts and explain some decisions

READ table - contains: title, rating, author, publication year, language, mark if it's part of a series, date read, genre, mark if I've reviewed it, edition (physical, e-, audio,  ARC) and times I've reread it

For example:
Title                                                      rating      author         public.    lang.     series  date read       genre

(stand alone: s. open series: o, finished series f)

EBOOKS table - contains: title, author, rating

OWN/TBR table - contains: title, stars, author, language, genre

SERIES tables - finished/won't continue, currently in the middle of, and the amount of books in the series

CLASSICS: a table for all author with bindups and listed all its contents (plays, short stories...) with title, rating, and order that it's in the book

CHARTS: monthly count, yearly count, star rating, genres of both read and owned

(So the genres are a bit weird but if one catagory is technically a subcatagory of another - like fantasy and magic - you choose the one that is closest and if there isn't one you take a broader one.
So if it's a fantasy book without magic you choose fantasy.
It's been working for me, but I admit it's very peculiar.)

Updated lists

Recap

If you didn't read a post of mine from a while back stating that during february and march I will be posting biweekly, then you now know.
That is also true for today (a day without an actual post), so I made a list of lists I've previously made and now updated.

Also my monthly wrap-ups for January-March will be in one post at the end of March, since I'm in the middle of finals now and therefore won't be writing or reading.

Social Media

[Something Different]

Kuvahaun tulos haulle facebook, twitter, instagram, pinterest uses doughnuts
Social media is a big part of our lives but at times I feel like there are way too many. Each one prizes themselves to be unique and different, yet lots of the same stuff go around all the sites.
>So which ones do I use and for what?

>We can't really say what will stick and what will disappear (like Vine).
Whether you just want to talk to people you know, find new people to talk to, talk about certain subjects, see pictures of other people's lives, see pictures of certain subjects, see videos about this or that, live stream a video, see business profiles or simply see memes about silly animals - there are so many to choose from.

In this society we feel pressure to have an account in certain places so that we can be kept "in the loop" of things. It may be Facebook, Instagram or Twitter depending on your age, country and friends but many of us want to have another account somewhere else to feel apart of the whole world.
>For example this blog: most of you readers are people whom I don't know - and I love that. It makes me feel like I'm actually accomplishing something.

A question to ask yourself before choosing your social media outlet of choise is what do you want it for. People, pictures, certain subjects (dancing, painting, huomour etc.), videos, or just a way to spend time when you are stuck in line.

The most used ones are (in order):
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube, Pinterest & Instagram

>><><><<

>I feel like it all started with Facebook. A way to communicate and find people, and for that I still sometimes use it.

>Then there is YouTube, which I love for watching videos, but I don't know where it's headed with the YouTube RED subscription.

>Then I went right into Tumblr, which I loved for seeing pictures by following different hashtags and subjects.
I don't use it anymore since I switched to Pinterest for finding those same things, but I'm not too acting here either.

>Goodreads is my go to book catalogue app where you have a page and you can meet people, find new books, see lists, quotes and authors and vote in polls.

>Then there is Instagram which I have grown to love. I made one solely based around books (@booksonal).

Rereads

Time and Series

I've been on a journey regarding my TBR (To Be Read: books you own and haven't read). As you might know if you've been following my blog - I made an arrangement with myself, that I would read all the books I'd bought and not read before that year. (You can read more about that and how it worked here: link)

Other than not bying that many books, part of being able to reduce my TBR was not rereading that many books.
I LOVE rereading books because:
a) you know you'll love it
b) It's like reconnecting with an old friend
c) You get the perfect book for your mood, and sometimes you just really don't wanna get dissapointed
& d) it doesn't take as long as reading a new book

So not rereading books really made me appreciate how much I truly love doing it - and now that I've gotten my TBR down I'm loving rereading!

><><><

The problem I usually have with reading series is that I don't remember what happened in the last book, and I don't have time really want to get to the next one, and won't reread it.

So if you have this issue here is a solution that I really like:
A website like Shmoop, SparkNotes, Cliffsnotes have detailed everything for a classics book. From characters to the plot and themes you can find it there to refresh your memory.
(Also it might be a good idea to have one of these open to understand a book better)

But for YA books and books that aren't on those, there are similar websites:
Recaptains
BookSeriesRecaps

If the book is not there you can also always check if someone has made a spoiler review on it.

Bookshelf Organization

As I stated in a previous post, this is the post for how I organize my books on my shelves. I recently moved and switched shelves. My previous post about it can be found here, which is from over a year ago.

It has 9 shelves and I have organized them in sections. In each section the books are in an alphabetical order by the author, or if not I'll mention it.
The first three shelves are series that I have read and finished. Then the pile, with the pictures on top, are series I won't be continuing (yet I still want to keep them, mostly because I think they ended well and don't need a next book).

The fourth shelf on the left has stand-a-lone fantasy and magic books and next to them are suspence & mystery ones. Then the pile with the picture on top is my TBR. (Since the pile only has one left you can't exactly see how they would be organized, so I added the way I do it at the vvery end of this post). And the ones on the side are my TBR classics.

The fifth shelf is series that I am in the middle of. And then the pile on the right, on the same shelf, with a picture again, is series that I should finish. The difference with the shelf vs. the pile is that the ones on their side could be finished (the last book has been published).

The sixth shelf is for classics. On the right side are classics/award winners I've read, and are ordered by their publication dateOn the left side are bindups of classics (of which from some I have read all and from some I have yet to read any).

The seventh shelf has lighter reads (as in it would be weird if one of the characters got shot for instance).
On the right side of the white block are "fluffy" books. And on the left side are "non-fluffy" books.
The eigth shelf, on the left, are Donald Ducks and my Roald Dahls. And in the middle (right of the white block) are my non-fictions. Then on the very right side are books I'm planning of getting rid of.
The ninth and last shelf has childrens books and some photo albums.

TBR pile: This is the section which is not organized by the author but by the date I have gotten them.
Books from my librarys/sisters/brothers shelves & classics I haven't read yet.
Then my "actual" TBR which is devided to four sections: last books in series, continuation books in series, first books in series & lastly stand-a-lones.
Any questions? Do ask.,
Sally

Book Organizing

Something New

So I decided, upon getting your requests, to do kind of an organization/TBR pile post.
Now mainly I catagorize my books in an alphabetical order, by author. And also I have separated my read and not read to different shelves. In my TBR shelf though I have multiple different systems, which I will get to.

So first my ´read´ shelf thingy:
It is basically a really long shelf, from Ikea, that has almost all the books I own and have read.
They are all in alphabetical order by author as I mentioned.
>Also, I say almost all because I have a place for the Harry Potter series (picture above) elsewhere and a small self with books I love from when I was smaller.
TBR
2nd and 3rd
So then to my huge TBR pile! I was looking at them and decided to organize them again, so these pictures are from when I was working. Usually when I pick what to read next I choose based on what genre I fele like reading so I decided to organize them based on that thought.

1st

First pile: Classics

Second pile: Stand-alones

Third pile: Quick reads (short books, books I've already started, middle grade books...)

Fourth pile: Books I don't know if I'll read, anytime soon atleast. (No picture because I picked them out of the other piles after I organized them...)

6th
5th
Fifth pile: All the books that are part of some serie

7th
8th

Sixth pile: Now this is slightly complicated: continuation books. So for example I have read four PLL books. The fifth one is in the fifth pile and the sixth and seventh ones are in this pile. So the fifth pile only consists of only the one and next one in some series I would read. If I own the next ones they go into this pile. This helps me see what book to read next, for it is not that long of a list if the whole serie is not there!

Seventh pile: Books I have in Finnish. (classics and non are separated also...)

Eigth pile: Books I am planning on reading next which is  ASAP for most.

These piles I then put onto a bookshelf, in parts.

And I think that's about all of them... It seems like a whole lot now... But the TBR jar is working on that though! So jay books.
Love,
Sally
